Does AI replace construction professionals?
No — and the honest reason is not reassurance, it is structure. AI is good at assembly and terrible at accountability. Construction runs on people who can be held responsible for a judgement, and a model cannot be held responsible for anything.
What actually changes
The work that disappears is the assembly: finding the records, formatting the sections, enumerating the hold points from a specification somebody is reading with a highlighter at nine in the evening. That is not the job. It is the tax on the job, and it is paid mostly by the most expensive people you employ.
What is left is the part that needed a professional in the first place — the judgement about whether the claim is good, whether the design is buildable, whether the risk is worth taking. A quantity surveyor who spends a fortnight assembling a claim and an afternoon arguing it is doing an afternoon of quantity surveying.
Accountability is the structural argument
A document that goes to a client with your company’s name on it was written by your company. An engineer signs it, and if it is wrong, that engineer and that firm carry the consequence — professionally, contractually, and in some jurisdictions personally.
That is not a technology limitation to be engineered away. It is the entire basis on which construction professionals are trusted, insured and paid, and it does not transfer to a model. Which means the human is not in the loop as a safety measure; the human is the author, and the tool writes the first draft.
The honest risk, which is not job losses
It is deskilling, and it is worth naming. If juniors never assemble a claim by hand, do they learn what a good one looks like well enough to spot a bad draft? That is a genuine question and the industry has not answered it.
The mitigation is the same discipline that makes the output trustworthy: read the citations before the prose, treat the gaps as findings, and require the reviewer to be the author rather than an approver. A professional who checks sources against records is still doing professional work — arguably more of it, and on the part that matters.
