Where should toolbox talk topics come from?

Your own data is the best library you have

Every near miss, violation and observation logged this week is a topic that has already proved it is relevant — something that nearly went wrong, on this site, to these people. Nothing in a generic library can compete with that for attention.

The four inputs worth checking before every talk: what nearly happened yesterday, what the job hazard analysis flags for today, what conditions today’s permits impose, and what the weather is about to do — heat stress and the midday work ban being the obvious one through a Gulf summer.

The free libraries, and what they are for

CPWR (the Center for Construction Research and Training) and NIOSH both publish free toolbox-talk libraries, many available in Spanish as well as English, and OSHA provides supporting materials. They are well made and cost nothing, and there is no reason not to use them.

Use them for the generic fundamentals a crew should hear periodically regardless of what is happening this week — and for the weeks when your own data genuinely has nothing to say. Treat them as the floor, not the plan.

If your talk topics could be published a year in advance, they are not coming from your site. That is the whole diagnostic, and it takes about ten seconds to apply to any programme.
