How accurate is AI document review in construction?
There is no credible published accuracy figure, and anybody quoting one should be asked where it came from. The honest framing is different: AI review is a first pass that never gets tired, and its value is measured by what it surfaces for a human, not by a percentage.
Why we will not give you a number
You will see accuracy percentages in this market. Treat them the way you would treat a contractor quoting a productivity rate with no project attached: the number is meaningless without the test set, and the test set is never published.
Accuracy against what? A submittal review has no single correct answer — two competent engineers will flag different things, and both will be right. A headline accuracy figure implies a ground truth that does not exist, and a vendor who produces one has either invented it or measured something far narrower than the thing you are buying.
The framing that is actually honest
AI review is a first pass. Its comparison is not against a perfect reviewer; it is against what happens today, which is a tired engineer reading the fortieth submittal on a Thursday evening and skimming the last twenty pages.
Judged that way the value is obvious and it is not about accuracy. It never gets tired. It reads the whole document every time. It checks the clause references against the actual contract rather than from memory. And it does that in seconds, which means the human reviewer starts from a list of things worth looking at rather than from page one.
What to demand instead of a percentage
Confidence, expressed usefully. A system that flags an issue and tells you how sure it is — and points at the exact clause it relied on — lets an engineer verify in seconds. A system that returns a flat list with no provenance forces them to re-do the review to check the review, which is worse than not having it.
And gaps. The most valuable output of a review is not what it found; it is what it could not find. A flag that says "the specification section this refers to is not in the document set" is a finding about your project, and it would have hurt you eventually whether or not anybody ran the review.
