Can AI draft construction documents, and where does the content come from?
It can draft the formulaic ones — ITPs, method statements, delay narratives, formal letters, BOQs, progress reports — from your project’s own connected records, citing what it used. The structure is automatable. The judgement is not, and the human stays the author.
The genre problem it solves
Construction documents are formulaic in structure and unforgiving in content. An ITP has a shape. A delay narrative has a very particular shape. Everybody in the industry knows what those shapes are.
And that shape is what you spend your evenings on. The hold points and acceptance criteria for an ITP are already in the specification — somebody is reading it with a highlighter at nine at night. The events for a delay narrative are already in the diaries and the instructions. The information exists. The document does not, because assembling it is a fortnight nobody has.
Grounded in the record — which is the whole difference
A tool that drafts from nothing produces plausible construction prose, and that is the most dangerous document type there is: fluent, confident, correctly formatted, and untethered from your project.
Drafting from the connected record is a different act. The ITP comes from the specification sections that actually apply. The delay narrative comes from your diaries and your programme. The claim analysis comes from the instructions, notices and contemporaneous records. And every draft cites what it used — so the first review question is “is this the right record?”, which a human answers in seconds, rather than “is this true?”, which takes an evening.
And the gaps are the most valuable output
Where the record was silent, the draft should say so rather than filling the space with something reasonable-sounding.
Because a gap it could not fill from your records is a hole in your project record — and that hole was going to hurt you in a dispute whether or not you ever drafted the document. Finding it on a Tuesday is considerably better than finding it in cross-examination.
