Rework
Work redone because it was not right the first time. It is the largest avoidable cost in construction, and most of it is never measured — because rework absorbed by a subcontractor never reaches anybody’s cost report.
The measured figure and the real figure are different numbers, and the gap between them is the point. What shows up in a cost report is direct, reported rework. What does not show up is the crew that quietly fixed its own error, the trade that reordered a component, and the sequence that was silently rearranged around a mistake.
Which is why the rework line is always smaller than the rework problem, and why an organisation that manages to the reported number is managing the wrong one.
