TRIR (Total Recordable Incident Rate)
Recordable injuries per 200,000 hours worked — roughly, per 100 full-time workers per year. It is the standard US benchmark, and it is a LAGGING indicator: it tells you what has already happened.
TRIR is genuinely useful for comparison, because the normalisation makes a 200-worker site comparable to a 2,000-worker one. And it is routinely misused as a target, at which point it stops measuring safety and starts measuring reporting.
A falling TRIR alongside a flat count of serious-injury precursors is not an improving site. It is a site that has got better at not recording things — and it will find out the difference in a way nobody wants.
